Sadly had a very poor experience with one of your officers today. Car #1907 Plate #XH1667. I had just arrived on scene at Spirit Halloween along Broward Boulevard with my Service Dog to shop and train around the spooky displays. I see a few other service dog handlers who were there to do the same but had told me they were having an access issue which is why they called the police in the first place. The manager of the store was trying to remove them for training their dogs in the store however Service Dogs In Training are protected and have public access rights in the state of Florida and asking well behaved Service Dogs to leave a public establishment for no reason other than they are training is Illegal under Ada law. Sadly the female officer did not know this law so she proceeded to say neither parties were in the wrong but that he was asking us to leave because of our service dogs and that we were “loitering”. Another handler while inside still trying to explain our rights as Service Dog Handlers to this officer somehow ends up being detailed “for not listening”. Gets put into the back of another officers police car Plate #XE8889 who had arrived on scene as backup. However the second male officer had a very calm demeanor as the Female officer DID NOT! When she came over I asked calmly and politely why the other handler was being detained and she shouted in my face “LEAVE” shocked at this rude and unprofessional response I ask again calmly saying “Okay but why is she being detained?” And the officer responds with “Would you like to be arrested too? Cause I’m on a roll today!” If that response alone doesn’t tell you the scary horrific mindset this cop was in, I don’t know what does. Clearly somewhere along the way she got on a power trip and sadly all of us Disabled Handlers Young Adults with Medical and Psychiatric disabilities were on the bad end of it. Multiple of the handlers went into episodes. Some had Panic attacks Others started to get affected by an extremely high heart rate putting them at risk of fainting. There was no excuse for the way the Female officer handled the situation or how she spoke to us. Again the male officer was calm and polite like a normal human should be. Thankfully they let the one handler go with what I’m assuming was a warning of whatever kind since they didn’t have a reason to detain her in the first place but I can tell you right now that handler will never trust a cop again and i find that extremely disheartening.

My mom, age 89, suffers from Alzheimer’s stage 3. She left her house at 3am without anyone knowing. My dad called me on the phone very upset. He is 93. I called 911. I explained everything and the address to the Plantation police dispatcher who was very understanding.
When I arrived at my folks house from Davie, there were 5 police cars at the house. They found my mom several houses away trying to get in. Lost and confused they were gentle and kind. They walked slowly with her back to the house. Sgt Ryan and Ofc Canary among several other officers could d not have been nicer. They gave us numbers to call for advice and took her pic to keep on file incase it happens again. I love the Plantation police Dept. I am forever grateful!!!
Sincerely,
